LIFE AND DEATH

When I Am Dead, My Dearest

Christina Rossetti

Christina Rossetti (1810-1894) is of Italian origin. She started writing poetry from an early age. A religious woman at heart, she remained single throughout her life. Goblin Market and Other Poems (1862) contains the pure lyric, narrative fable, ballad and devotional poetry. Her potery is filled with both sensuous details and with religious severity.

This poem, also published under the title “Song” elsewhere, tells the dear one not to be sentimental and sing sad songs for her When she is dead. Tile first stanza deals with the world of the living and the second with the poet’s experience in the grave.

Christina Rossetti poem

When I am dead, my dearest,

Sing no sad songs for me;

Plant thou no roses at my head,

Non- shady cypress tree:

Be the green grass above me

With showers and dewdrops wet,

And if thou wilt, remember,

I shall name see the shadow,

I shall not feel the rain;

I shall not hear the nightingale

Sing on, as if in pain;

And dreaming through the twilight

That doth not rise nor set,

Haply I may remember,

And haply I may forget.
